Bills Demolish Jets, Get Back on Track

From the very start of Sunday’s game with the New York Jets, there was never a question as to which team was in charge. The Buffalo Bills promptly forced the Jets to go three-and-out on their first possession, then proceeded to march the ball down the field and score. The Bills would repeatedly score until it was over – a 45-17 rout of the Jets.

It was a great way to get back to the business of winning after an embarrassing loss to Jacksonville last week. Both sides of the ball clicked as QB Josh Allen and the offense put up 489 yards of offense, and the defense forced five New York turnovers. Even the special teams were solid as K Tyler Bass hit all six of his extra points and a 29-yard field goal.

Allen was extremely efficient, completing 21-of-28 passes for 366 yards and two touchdowns. His 15-yard scoring pass to Matt Breida opened the day’s scoring on Buffalo’s first drive. Buffalo took over on its 42-yard line, and Allen completed passes to Emmanuel Sanders and Dawson Knox before a Devin Singletary 15-yard run set up the Bills with a first-and-10 at the Jets 15.

The Jets put together a short 47-yard drive in the second quarter that was capped by Matt Ammendola’s 48-yard field goal. It would be New York’s only points until late in the game. The Buffalo defense harassed Jets QB Mike White all game long. White, who started his first NFL game just a few weeks ago, had led New York to an upset of Cincinnati. The Buffalo defense was not going to allow that to happen again.

Buffalo only sacked White once – recorded by DE Efe Obada – but the defense hit White seven times. The Bills picked off White four times and also recovered a fumble by Jets WR Corey Davis. Buffalo held New York to fewer than 300 yards of total offense until a late Jets drive resulted in their only other points of the game. The Jets gained 68 yards in eight plays before Elijah Moore caught a meaningless 15-yard pass from veteran QB Joe Flacco for a touchdown with just 2:08 remaining in the game.

The Bills defense allowed just 70 yards on the ground by the Jets. That forced White to the air, where he wound up 24-of-44 for 251 yards. Buffalo remains the No. 1 scoring defense in the NFL. In their past three games, Buffalo has allowed 17, 6, and 11 points. For the season, the Bills allow an average of 15.0 points per game. That’s 2.7 points better than No. 2 New England.

The 45-point outburst also puts the Bills among the top offenses in the NFL. Buffalo is second in the league in scoring, averaging 31.1 points per game, just a half-point behind Dallas. The 45 points also marked the fourth consecutive game in which the Jets gave up at least 31 points. New York allowed 45 in last week’s loss to the Colts, 31 in that win over Cincinnati, and 54 in a loss to the Patriots.

Buffalo’s defensive effort was even more impressive as the team played without DT Star Lotulelei, who was placed on the COVID-19 list just before the game. Next up for the Bills is the Indianapolis Colts. Indy has won four of its last five games though all four wins have been against teams with losing records (Houston, San Francisco, the Jets, and Jacksonville). It’s the beginning of a challenging four-game stretch for Buffalo as they face both New Orleans and Tampa Bay on the road sandwiched around a home game with 6-4 New England.

Go Bills!

A Few Thoughts About the Cowboys Game, in no particular order

© Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports   I can honestly say I didn't know if was going to write another one of these this season.  Not because of the prior wins or losses, but because I don't see a point in writing the same content over and over again.  The Bills team and individual players rarely did enough from week to week that constituted 9 things and lyrics to talk about.  I mean, I can sum it all up with Kincaid, Kindcaid, McD's defense collapses, and Floyd/Oliver.  However, this Dallas
