GG1
Correct me if I'm wrong, but lately there have been very few deadline rental trades that netted a 1st for one player, let alone a 1st and a half way decent prospect.

I'd add to that: Reinhart's value today is what it is. There's no "sign and trade" in the NHL to my knowledge. What happens with him after he's no longer Sabres' property is irrelevant. Because the league did away with "conditional return for a player based on whether he signs in the new place or not" trade condition, the league also allows teams that trade for a player's rights the ability to sign him for 8 years w/out first waiting a year (provided the contract is at a point that they can negotiate a new deal - aka in the last year of a multi year deal or post-January 1 on a 1 year deal). So, "sign & trade" isn't really a thing though it is allowed.

True. But that seems to have been due to the teams that like to trade their picks like TB & Pittsburgh already having traded them away and there not really being as many of those true studs going at the deadline. There wasn't a Karlsson nor Stone moving at the deadline IIRC. The prizes were more of the Taylor Hall variety. And w/ his NMC, there weren't any teams on his 'yes' list that would go as high as a 1st. Plus w/ the Seattle draft on the horizon teams weren't really looking to sign their own UFAs right after a trade &/or the start of the off-season because every one of those guys they locked down meant another body they had to expose to Seattle. Correct. There were 3 firsts exchanged last season and the veterans going back the other way weren't close to the prize SR is.
GG1
It just belatedly dawned on me that Panthers have 3 of the 4 top draft picks from the '14 draft. 1

I think they did, along with having the entirety of the NC State DL. Let's hope Panthers have the same success that the Bills did.

Got it. The tweet just made the next day’s result seem worse to me as a fan. Edit: ….And I just looked up what Ullmark signed for. 4 years @ $5million. So he’d have stayed in B’lo for a huge premium. Expected, but not good. Edited July 30, 2021 by snafu
GG1
Stories like this prove once again that @4merper4mer is our resident Nostradamus. J-S Dea drops the bomb on Eichel's leadership “I didn’t really get the chance to chat a lot with him,” Dea said in an English translation of the French talk. “I don’t think he’s a bad person when you get to know him, but all I can say is that he’s not Sidney Crosby, either. You see the difference in leaders when you get into a room where Sidney Crosby is. No matter who you are, the individual, your name, your draft rank, he’s going to take care of you. He’s going to talk to you as if he was talking to a fan, a kid he would meet on the street. “Like I said, he’s not a bad person, but perhaps there are also reasons why Buffalo was in a situation like that. “I have been around leaders over the course of my career, and often you see the difference, the type of person he is off the ice. He’s an excellent hockey player, but in terms of leadership, sometimes I think … I’m sure that with age and the maturity he will gain, he’s going to get better and better. Often, it’s a lot of pressure having to perform and being a captain at such a young age. “He’s not a bad person, but I don’t think he’s the leader we can find with the Penguins.”
Alaska Darin
Eichel wasn't setup for success from the beginning and it's only gotten worse. Crosby was surrounded by Hall of Famers from his very first game and the Penguins did a great job augmenting the roster VERY quickly. Guys on the Pens' roster Sid's first season: Mario, Palffy, Recchi, LeClair, Odelein, Gonchar. By his third season they'd added Sykora, Malkin, Staal, Whitney, Letang, Roberts, and Hossa. While Crosby led the team in points in the playoffs on the way to his first Cup, he was tied with 3 other guys on the roster for playoff goals. Eichel is basically JP Losman. Who knows what coulda been if the Sabres had been even remotely competent at building the roster around him. Instead they just anointed him savior and proceeded to do one dumbass thing after another.
snafu
Yep. Captain isn't necessarily the best player on the team. Now that Eichel is probably gone, Reinhart is gone, and Risto is gone, the Sabres will probably slap the "C" on Dahlin -- which would be insane. The 2nd part was unstated, but pretty obvious as to be the reason he was bummed about the duration of the recovery from injury. They wanted to keep Ullmark as the starter and told people they expected he'd sign. Seems they were very far apart on term so don't understand why they expected they had a deal in place. That news that he's a Bruin was crushing. So disappointed w/ this off-season. This bad movie just keeps going.
