Ann
For each tax credit dollar allocated, the initial tax revenue returned to local and state governments was $1.07, according to the report. I am not sure about the math after reading the rest of the article, but maybe there was a better explanation in the report (which I did not read). I would think it should have been a bigger return. 🤷♀️ California lost out on nearly $8 billion in economic activity, 28,000 jobs and over $350 million in revenue for state and local coffers from film and TV projects that chose to film elsewhere in recent years. That’s one of the takeaways in a new report by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) for the Motion Picture Assn., a trade body for the major studios. The eye-popping estimate was based on a review of 157 out of 312 projects that applied for but did not receive a California tax credit and took their productions elsewhere between 2015 and 2020. </snip> The current state program, which sunsets in 2025, allows filmmakers to recoup 20% to 25% of spending on qualified costs, such as money spent building sets and hiring crews. Producers use the credits to offset state taxes. “The tax credits are an investment in keeping the film and TV industry in California, potentially reversing a loss and retaining a critical mass that will generate future tax receipts,” the report said. The authors estimated that during the five-year period the program contributed $22 billion in economic output and 110,300 jobs, including 64,600 in direct employment. This returned $962 million in tax revenue to the state and local governments. </snip>

Dubs
Thanks! My entertainment habits have changed so much in the past 5 years it’s night and day. Nearly everything I used to watch back then I don’t now. - News: Aside from having either the local news or one of the networks/fox on in the background, I’ll never actually pay attention to anything. Instead I get snippets from here and there, get a sense of what’s going on, then dig in deeper with long form interviews or podcasts. - Sports: virtually nothing. I’ll watch live football and golf majors, but other than that nothing. I don’t watch a single sports “show” anymore. This is probably the biggest difference in my habits. Sports was my world as a child though my mid 30s. Now I view it as corrupted by politics and chuckleheads, so the only interesting thing is the actual live event. - Network TV: complete joke. If you watch network TV I think you’re braindead. Aside from the occasional true crime series, network TV has not a single interesting thing on it. - Cable TV: the last scripted drama I watched on cable TV was Sons of Anarchy. I’ve liked some of the niche channels, food network, hgtv, but even those are deteriorating. - original streaming content: if you can find a show now that isn’t obviously excluding heterosexual, white men that would be a nice. That being said, occasionally find some decent original shows on HBO, Netflix, etc…but it’s few and far between. - Movies: the last time I actually went to the movies to watch something I was actually excited to see is in the distant past. I’d say there’s maybe 2 or 3 movies a year I’m moderately interested in. Either unoriginal, over produced, politically slanted, or all three. Not remotely interested in wasting time or money on that. so, basically find myself throwing on documentaries or reruns of a couple shows or rewatching older movies. But mostly now listen to podcasts, read, or non-media related things. 4

Wacka
When I was in California, I got stuck watching one of those romance shows on Lifetime or Hallmark or whatever. The main character was going home(I think Vermont) for her wedding with her Maid of Honor, who was a yuppie in NYC. The show checked all the boxes. The bride was overweight(check). Her fiancé was black (check). The minister and doctor were black(check) (I think Vermont, although liberal, is the whitest state in the union). The Maid of Honor had a gay black boss(check). The 4 women at he bachelorette party were white , asian, indian and black (check). Her family had a maple syrup business, but the trees in aerial views were changing colors and they said the sap was flowing. Every scene looked like it was 70-80 outside which is not in Spring in New England.I pointed all this out to the person I was watching it with and she was like "Oh my god , you're right." Shit like that really bugs me. It's almost completely contrary to human behavior. There's mounds of evidence that people associate unconsciously with those that look most like them, rarely with people who look different. The most interesting, borderline creepy, confirmation of that being the original Planet of the Apes.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do know that my wife would have let me have it if I pulled that Will Smith stunt. I would have been sitting there VERY conflicted until she gave the the "don't you dare" death stare.
