Bills Demolish Jets, Get Back on Track

From the very start of Sunday’s game with the New York Jets, there was never a question as to which team was in charge. The Buffalo Bills promptly forced the Jets to go three-and-out on their first possession, then proceeded to march the ball down the field and score. The Bills would repeatedly score until it was over – a 45-17 rout of the Jets.

It was a great way to get back to the business of winning after an embarrassing loss to Jacksonville last week. Both sides of the ball clicked as QB Josh Allen and the offense put up 489 yards of offense, and the defense forced five New York turnovers. Even the special teams were solid as K Tyler Bass hit all six of his extra points and a 29-yard field goal.

Allen was extremely efficient, completing 21-of-28 passes for 366 yards and two touchdowns. His 15-yard scoring pass to Matt Breida opened the day’s scoring on Buffalo’s first drive. Buffalo took over on its 42-yard line, and Allen completed passes to Emmanuel Sanders and Dawson Knox before a Devin Singletary 15-yard run set up the Bills with a first-and-10 at the Jets 15.

The Jets put together a short 47-yard drive in the second quarter that was capped by Matt Ammendola’s 48-yard field goal. It would be New York’s only points until late in the game. The Buffalo defense harassed Jets QB Mike White all game long. White, who started his first NFL game just a few weeks ago, had led New York to an upset of Cincinnati. The Buffalo defense was not going to allow that to happen again.

Buffalo only sacked White once – recorded by DE Efe Obada – but the defense hit White seven times. The Bills picked off White four times and also recovered a fumble by Jets WR Corey Davis. Buffalo held New York to fewer than 300 yards of total offense until a late Jets drive resulted in their only other points of the game. The Jets gained 68 yards in eight plays before Elijah Moore caught a meaningless 15-yard pass from veteran QB Joe Flacco for a touchdown with just 2:08 remaining in the game.

The Bills defense allowed just 70 yards on the ground by the Jets. That forced White to the air, where he wound up 24-of-44 for 251 yards. Buffalo remains the No. 1 scoring defense in the NFL. In their past three games, Buffalo has allowed 17, 6, and 11 points. For the season, the Bills allow an average of 15.0 points per game. That’s 2.7 points better than No. 2 New England.

The 45-point outburst also puts the Bills among the top offenses in the NFL. Buffalo is second in the league in scoring, averaging 31.1 points per game, just a half-point behind Dallas. The 45 points also marked the fourth consecutive game in which the Jets gave up at least 31 points. New York allowed 45 in last week’s loss to the Colts, 31 in that win over Cincinnati, and 54 in a loss to the Patriots.

Buffalo’s defensive effort was even more impressive as the team played without DT Star Lotulelei, who was placed on the COVID-19 list just before the game. Next up for the Bills is the Indianapolis Colts. Indy has won four of its last five games though all four wins have been against teams with losing records (Houston, San Francisco, the Jets, and Jacksonville). It’s the beginning of a challenging four-game stretch for Buffalo as they face both New Orleans and Tampa Bay on the road sandwiched around a home game with 6-4 New England.

Go Bills!

Nice recap Bills staff writer. The Bills D appeared more aggressive. Big fan of Edmunds , but Klien did such a good job If I'm McD/Frazier I might rest Edmunds another week.  I realze the Jets are a bad football. Still, thoroughly beating them the way Buffalo did was enough to take the sting out of the Jags loss. Losing is hard when you think that you are a Championship caliber football team. On the other hand losing teaches you valuable lessons in the process. The whole league is watching. So as a coaching staff and football team you better have a good response after a loss.  I think its safe to say the Buffalo Bills responded well.

Thanks OP, much appreciated. This site has the best Bills sports reading material on the internet IMO. You guys and gals rock.

As I said in the Jets GDT, I would like to see us move away from the nickel in certain situations. Such as those against teams that like to employ two TE's like the coming games against the *Patriots. In that, I think Klein should be left to the MLB and Edmunds and Milano to cover those TE's. At least use them to take away the underneath/intermediate stuff.

Yep, me too.  I hope that Frazier has an open mind to tweaking his base nickel D to having 3 line backers out there.  That may mean Taron Johnson sees much less playing time, unless he rotates with White and Levi Wallace, kind of like what they do with the D Line.

Rather than giving up on Edmunds, move him outside to cover the TE and have Klein at MLB, which requires better game instincts than what Edmunds possesses, IMO.  I think this might be a better plan for teams like Indy and NE.

Don't discount the weakness of having Edmunds defending good rush teams.

I certainly don't discount that.  Edmunds isn't the best at diagnosing and defending a good rushing attack.  That is why I believe Klein should see more playing time at MLB.  We can only hope McD and Frazier agree.

Well, we can't really quibble with the overall management of the number one ranked defense. We are allowing (15.0) 2.7 points less than the number 2 ranked points allowed D (Patriots). We are number 2 in passing D with 190.2 yards per game against and are number three in rushing yards allowed with 83.9 per game.

While I do think we would be better off against the heavy tight end teams employing a 4-3 for first and second downs, it is awfully hard to argue with the overall results so far. It's a matchup thing for me. We have to trust McBeane, that they will get 'er done, whatever they ultimately decide to do.
