She was 96 after all.  It's not like the odds of predicting her death date were one in a million.

The concept that a person should rule or have a say in decisions that directly effect millions of people due solely to the order in which and the people they were born to is abhorrent, dangerous, and evil.

 

Maybe she was a "good" queen or a "good" person but she was still an active participant in that system and as such I have nothing but disdain for all involved.  This wasn't a queen from centuries ago before democracy or the concept of rights. This was active throughout the 20th century and she and those around her were absolutely fine perpetuating and benefiting from the monarchy.

 

This has nothing to do with colonialism or imperialism or any other ism Twitter is enraged about.  Monarchies should not exist in the 21st century as by their definition they do not respect individual rights.

I agree. In Quebec we don’t really care for and are generally hostile to the monarchy even though the rest of Canada still does.

Several things happen when a queen dies that prevent the loss of the colony/hive.

 

If the queen dies the workers will take the most recent eggs and begin feeding them royal jelly to create an emergency queen. They'll do this to at least 5 to as many as 10 cells. Chosen at random they know which to use. The royal jelly enables the development of the sexual reproductive organs of the bee. And since all fertilized eggs are female there are and should be in a healthy hive - plenty of options.

 

However, if no eggs were made a laying worker is made, sometimes dozens or even hundreds. They are females without developed sexual organs but still posses unfertilized eggs. The unfertilized eggs make drones (males) in 24 days. The drones are then able to leave the hive at maturity and breed with another queen to carry on the genetics of the hive enabling it to never truly die.

 

The queen they mate with will mate with 10-20 drones on average and collect 16-20mm sperm.
