What could a Josh Allen extension look like?

Bills GM Brandon Beane said last month that despite the reality of a pandemic-reduced salary cap for 2021 that the club could get a contract extension completed for QB Josh Allen this offseason. In confirming it could be done, Beane did admit the team would have to get creative in light of the cap constraints.

So what might such a contract for Buffalo's franchise quarterback look like?

Mike Ginnitti, Founder and editor of Spotrac.com, a popular professional sports salary site, took his best stab at how it might look in terms of structure in an appearance on 'One Bills Live' Wednesday.

"Before 2020 he's probably looking at a Deshaun Watson type deal," said Ginnitti. "A standard four-year extension with a good-sized signing bonus that doesn't hold much dead cap. It's low risk, high cash traditional quarterback extension. But what we saw with Mahomes didn't move the needle with regard to the Chiefs cap number and it slightly moves it in 2021. So if the Bills do an extension they'll have to be more creative and go somewhere in between Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes' deals both in terms of the money and the structure so they can keep Josh's cap figure neutral this year so they can build around him while also putting some cash in his pocket and make sure he's happy over the next three or four years."

In the interests of social and racial equity, the league should mandate that Allen be paid no more than 80% the average of the contracts of the top 5 BIPOC QBs in the league, including what Kaepernick would be making if he weren't oppressed.

And no guaranteed money for white QBs.

Are you forgetting the 3/5 rule?

Buffalo News article (Vic Carucci) discussing the pros and cons of an extension now, how it might be structured if it happens, and the dangers of giving him an extension based on one good year.

Bills offseason questions: Is now the time for Josh Allen to get a contract extension?

They could wait, but would it be wise?

Joel Corry, for one, doesn't think so. He's a former sports agent who covers contract situations for CBS Sports.

"The proactive teams try to sign their core players sooner rather than later," Corry told The Buffalo News by phone. "Because the longer you wait, the more expensive it's going to be."

Brandon Beane focused on free agency, draft before Josh Allen extension

</snip>

Josh is a guy that we do believe in and we would definitely take a look at him later this offseason,” Beane said, via Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News. “Right now, we’ll focus on our upcoming free agents, plus anybody we want to add, and then the draft. Generally, what I’ve done here is look at guys to extend once we get through the draft, see what our money is like, see how we could structure it to fit not only this year, but the years beyond.

If Baker Mayfield gets $35M per year (average), what does Josh get!?

Defending Baker Mayfield: Why wouldn't the Cleveland Browns give him an extension?

In the wake of Jared Goff and Carson Wentz being dealt away from the teams that drafted them, the same phrase has begun to reverberate with regards to the Cleveland Browns and their quarterback, Baker Mayfield.

“Cautionary tales.”

</snip>

But going halfway and pushing off an extension invites downside, too. What if Mayfield is better in 2021? A potential extension would cost the Browns even more down the line, as Tim Hasselbeck noted on ESPN this week. That would only make it more difficult to get one done at all.

</snip>

To get a deal done with Mayfield this summer, the Browns probably will have to start in the neighborhood of $35 million over four years. That would make Mayfield one of the five highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, pending what happens with Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, who also are extension eligible.

But others down the line, like Mayfield’s former Oklahoma teammate Kyler Murray, are going to continue to reset the quarterback market next offseason. What might seem expensive now could quickly become a bargain, especially as the league negotiates new rights deals.

</snip>

Franchise quarterbacks are incredibly hard to find, and it's virtually impossible to win without one, as Cleveland has had to painfully learn over the years. Now is not the time to get cute, dodge about or worry why it might go wrong, just because it did in Philly or L.A.

The Browns appear -- finally -- to have their franchise quarterback. Acting otherwise could prove to be a cautionary tale of its own.

Once again, Beane stating Josh's contract will be discussed in May after the draft (today's presser).

I laughed when he said Josh was going to give them a huge hometown discount (he said it in jest if people missed it).

Josh Allen contract extension: Bills GM Brandon Beane says he wants to get a deal done sooner than later

</snip>

"It helps you for your planning the sooner you can get that contract done," Beane told NFL Media's Jim Trotter and Steve Wyche on the Huddle & Flow podcast, via NFL.com. "Again, I hope that we can get him done, if not this year, next year. You don't want to get into the franchise (tag) and all that stuff. It's a tool that you use if you have to to keep a great player, but at the end of the day, we want Josh here for the long term. We want him to be happy, and obviously, we want it to be a deal where we can still put talented players around him because Josh is a competitor. He's not wired for us just to pay him, then not be able to put stuff around him. So we'll try and find that deal that works for him and works for us."

Now is the best time for the Bills to get a contract done.

Josh is very happy with the team and the community. I don't think that that leads to the so-called "hometown discount" as they say, but it does mean negotiations would be friendly and reasonable.

Josh's new contract will be huge, but if he has an even more successful year (we hope) the price would only increase.

All other big QB contracts will also be going up so....................get it done !

Every year they wait, the AAV likely increases 5-10% minimum.  GMBB knows this and will do what it takes to get the best deal for each side.

This combined with how Buffalo upgraded the backup QB position appears to be all part of the Beane mans posturing IMO.  Not a fan of having any kind of rift developing.

Eh, I think it's more a matter of waiting to see what kind of money they have available (not to mention concentrating on the draft) than any form of posturing.

They'll eventually get down to making a cap-friendly deal that ensures Josh gets paid. I don't see Allen as a guy who is going to demand to bankrupt the team to stay (*cough* Brees *cough*).
