The Sean McDermott thread

Thread for praise and criticism of the Bills Head Coach.

I was originally concerned that he was way too conservative , but now I can see that he was smart enough to know that he didn’t have the players to be anything else.

That is a pretty fair assessment.

I am hoping he pulls a rabbit out of Frazier’s hat and they get the defense back on track.

The two things that drove me up a wall last night that were coaching related were:

-Both safties 30 yards downfield on 3d and 20

-Tannehill rushing around right end for 10+ yards multiple times (+ a TD)

Those should be fixable, but shouldn't have happened in the first place.

This is my first post on here so first of all I feel like Dorothy after she woke from her dream. you were there and you and you! . LOL. Anywho, I trust the process and am willing to give him tome to right the ship. We have seen hiccups like this in the past and in the past they have corrected. Build on the good games and the bad McD!

I honestly don't worry about games like this and don't really try to take anything away from it, other than it wasn't their night. It happens. My son called me after the game and we had this very discussion. We talked about how teams sometimes take on the personalities of their coaches. What I like about McDermott is that he is a guy that doesn't get too high or too low. He will learn what he can from the film and move on to next week. So will his team.

I saw this under Marv Levi and the SB Bills of the early 90s. I remember some games far worse than the Titans game and watched them deal with it for what it was and move on.

Not sure if this is McDermott related, or Frazier related, or a combo of both, but.. My mind has been boggled by the inefficiency of the defense - especially in the red zone. I keep hoping for them to flip a switch and figure it out like they did a couple years ago after getting blown out in the first few games of the year, but hitting their stride later on.

Just dropped in to see what's up here.

I have to say that I found the picture of McDermott on the sidelines at the beginning of the Titans game amazing.   He had two feet on the sideline, spread pretty far apart.  Bent forward at the waist, hands firmly on his knees.  A gaitor coverer his neck, mouth, and nose, and his cap covered his forehead.  All you could see of his face was his eyes peering out, fixed on the coin toss.   He was all wrestler, ready for the whistle.   He was ready to go to war.

Incredible leader.

OK, I understand that this thread is for praise and criticism; but where are we supposed to post our backhanded compliments, blatant sarcasm, and passive aggression?

Well, yeah, I guess I can imagine the woman who would go for that image.  And the man.

He just looked like a football coach to me.

Does there exist anywhere that backhanded compliments, blatant sarcasm, and passive aggression are not appreciated?

I think this may be a fair point.

Tuesday night's abortion notwithstanding, we finally have a GM, a HC, a QB, a #1 WR and an OC. I'm still out on our DC. But all the 'primary' pieces are there. Hard to be down on this team.

Love McD.  He’s the coach Rex wanted to project as and Marrone could only dream of being - respectively.  My only concern is his faith in familiarity.  That’s a coach’s downfall.  When you can’t see players objectively (talent, demeanor, abilities), you make bad decisions in personnel.  Sometimes fans see it before you do.  I think that’s what could be happening with some of the roster moves made.

All this said though, the D was put in a horrible place Thursday what with so many factors going against them.  Despite what we all think, they really played better than the score indicated when I drummed you the courage to rewatch some film.  We HAVE to set edges better or this modified 2 D is doomed.  The objective of any “bend without breaking “ D is controlling big plays and keeping everything in front of you.  That can’t happen I’d your players aren’t disciplined to controlling their gaps.  That said, I think they’ll be fine.  Every D is struggling in some way due to the offseason issues.  They need time to gel.  If they do though...   Whoa.  This team is going to be very good!  Also, and this needs to be said...

McD has earned all of our trust.  What he and Beane have done is incredible.

This is the first game I watched all season and have seen since going to the Houston playoff game.

We are missing energy up the middle. Oliver isn't able to push the OL, Harry is abysmal, the other new folks we got in who I haven't bothered to learn the names of yet were ineffective. We missed Jordan Phillips and needed a better edge setting end to pivot off of for our weakside. This was Lawson.

We played such a poor base defense that i was astonished this was the same team as last year.  This poor base defense was as much about play calling as it was about using the lack of talent available.

That lack of talent is a Hyde who has lost many steps, a Josh Norman who played better than expected, the extra DB (Neal?) Playing like he was lost. White having his boo boo was significant, as was Milano.  Poyer is trying to do it all himself and leaving himself exposed. This is all a downfall from our poor DL not keeping pressure in the pocket and containing the edge.

Back to Milano...I've said this in several group texts with fellow Bills fans for a year and I will say it here: Milano is more important to this team and better at his position than Edmunds is at his. Edmunds is a better athlete and football player but he is not as good of a fit as Milano is at his. This is similar to Thomas Davis who was more important than Keuchly in Carolina.

I can't remember the players names, or know the new guys by name...haven't paid a lick of attention to the team due to Covid and all the drama I turned it off. It was fun to watch the game as a fan without the heavy investment.

Btw, someone go dust off the Cam Newton threads. Told ya in 2017 and maybe 2016 even that Newton would be done in Carolina by 2020.  He will be out of the league by 2023, happily retired and hopefully able to walk upright.
