Super Bowl LV Preview: Kansas City vs. Tampa Bay

   (1 review)

It is finally Super Bowl week, and for the first time in the game’s history, the host team will play in its own stadium. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by future Hall of Fame QB Marsha, will take on the Kansas City Chiefs, who have won 25 of their last 27 games. One of those wins was their comeback win over San Francisco in last year’s Super Bowl.

The Chiefs have their own future Hall of Famer under center in last year’s Super Bowl MVP, Patrick Mahomes. After clearing concussion protocol and playing through a turf toe last week, Mahomes still threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns in Kansas City’s convincing 38-24 victory over Buffalo in the AFC title game.

The stage is set. The Chiefs can become the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since Marsha did it as a member of the New England **Patriots in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Marsha, who is playing in his 10th Super Bowl, can win his seventh ring.

Rematch

In case you may have forgotten, the Chiefs and Bucs played each other during the regular season. Kansas City jumped out to a 17-0 lead and then held on as the Bucs made it close. Marsha’s magic ran out as the Chiefs won 27-24.

In NFL history, a Super Bowl rematch of an AFC team and an NFC team that played during the regular season has happened four times.

If you know your Super Bowl history, you will recognize that the NFC was the winner in each of those four games. The AFC is 0-4 in Super Bowl rematches. If Mahomes can lead the Chiefs to a victory, it would be the first time an AFC team won a Super Bowl rematch against an NFC team.

In that first game this season also played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Tyreek Hill caught a pair of touchdown passes – 75 and 44 yards – to give the Chiefs a 17-0 first-quarter lead. The Bucs stayed in the game with a Marsha pass to RB Ronald Jones for a second-quarter touchdown.

Hill would catch his third touchdown of the day late in the third quarter, and Marsha hit WR Mike Evans twice for scores in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough.

Bucs Offense on a Roll

Even at 43 years of age, Marsha still has it. He has led the Bucs offense on a scoring spree as of late. Tampa Bay has scored 30 or more points in each of its last six games. Marsha threw for three touchdowns in the NFC title game as the Bucs beat Green Bay 31-26. It was the 10th consecutive game in which Marsha threw for more than one touchdown.

Like Kansas City, Tampa Bay was among the top six scoring offenses in the NFL during the regular season. The Bucs averaged 30.1 points per game and hit the 40-point mark four times this season. The Bucs had the second-best passing offense (289.1 yards per game) during the regular season. With the likes of Evans and fellow receiver Chris Godwin and tight ends Cameron Brate and Rob Gronkowski, Tampa Bay has proven they can score on just about anyone.

The Chiefs Can Play Defense

While Tampa Bay can light it up, there are many that don’t have a favorable opinion of the Kansas City defense. Those in that category might want to take note. The Chiefs have given up an average of just 18.3 points in their last three games.

In two playoff games, the Chiefs have produced five sacks, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery. They held the Browns to 17 points and were beating the Bills 38-15 before giving up nine points late in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs haven’t allowed 30 points to an opponent in seven straight.

Keys to a Victory

The Kansas City offensive line is going to have to come through and protect Mahomes. The Chiefs will be without All-Pro offensive tackle Eric Fisher who tore an Achilles tendon in the AFC championship game. Head coach Andy Reid will shuffle some people around, but the offensive line has to protect Mahomes. In the regular-season game, the Bucs were able to sack Mahomes twice and record seven QB hits, which was with Fisher in the lineup.

The Bucs will be about getting pressure on Mahomes and slowing down the Chiefs’ playmakers. In the NFC title game, the Bucs put serious pressure on Aaron Rodgers, sacking him five times and forcing one interception. The Packers had the No. 1-graded pass protection unit in the NFL. If Tampa Bay can do the same to Mahomes, they could become the first NFL team to win a Super Bowl in its home stadium.

© Tina MacIntyre-Yee / USA TODAY NETWORK   I know we're not ready to process the fact that the Buffalo Bills' season is over, as many of us are still trying to come to grips with our emotions following the latest disappointment. Many are frustrated, bitter, confused, and possibly just fed up with their favorite football team after falling short of expectations yet again.   It's understandable to have mixed feelings about how to feel about this team's effort. Buffalo Bills vs. Cincinnati Bengals Divisional Round preview

© Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports   Here we get a rematch of the Week 17 matchup that never happened. What was previously viewed as a potential playoff matchup has actually come to fruition. Both the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals should have had no issue whomping their Wild Card opponents, as each foe was forced to start their backup quarterback (third-string for Miami).   Yet, each potential Super Bowl contender wound up struggling to knock off their rival. As we know a

© Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports   Naturally, the biggest story coming into the week was whether Tua Tagovailoa would be able to play after suffering what may be his third concussion of the season, back on Christmas day. But it won’t be the NFL’s leader in yards per attempt under center. Instead, we’ll see seventh-round rookie Skylar Thompson make his third career NFL start.   This small bit of news has drastically altered the outlook of the Buffalo Bills vs. Miami Dolphins Wil

Buffalo Bills vs. New England Patriots Week 18 preview

© Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports   Starting off with the elephant in the room, this is, by far, the strangest game preview we’ve ever produced here at Bills Fans. How does one prepare for the next game when we’re all waiting to hear positive news regarding Damar Hamlin?    This isn’t about us; it’s about the 24-year-old’s health and his family.    More so, how can the Buffalo Bills as an organization quickly move on and act like everything is back to normal just six

Buffalo Bills vs. Cincinnati Bengals Week 17 preview

© JAMIE GERMANO/USA TODAY Sports   Aside from Week 6 against the Kansas City Chiefs, this upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals may be the toughest matchup yet for the Buffalo Bills. Unlike some other battles this season, the Rumbling Herd appears to be catching Joe Burrow’s Bengals at the worst time possible.   You think the Bills are red-hot as of late, winning six consecutive games? Well, the Bengals are white-hot winners of their past seven matchups.    Ob

    • Billsfans Bets: Super Bowl LVII Preview and Pick
Super Bowl LVII has been set with the Kansas City Chiefs squaring off against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The game will take place on Sunday, February 12th at 6:30 PM EST. at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. LVII will be the 57th edition of sport's most prestigious event.

Kansas City will be making its fifth appearance in the Super Bowl. With a 2-2 record, they will look to get that record past .500 and continue penciling their name in the history books.

Philadelphia will return to the big game for the fourth time in franchise history. Five years ago, they were able to slay the dragon in the New England Patriots, winning 41-33 for their first Super Bowl in franchise history.

This is not a matchup rooted in history, as the teams have only played nine times since 1972. Kansas City leads the all-time series 5-4, but the result of the next matchup is all anyone will remember. ...

    • Buffalo Bills 2022-23 Season Review
I know we're not ready to process the fact that the Buffalo Bills' season is over, as many of us are still trying to come to grips with our emotions following the latest disappointment. Many are frustrated, bitter, confused, and possibly just fed up with their favorite football team after falling short of expectations yet again.

It's understandable to have mixed feelings about how to feel about this team's effort. Should we point fingers, criticize opponents or refs, or even question coaching decisions after such a bad loss?

The truth is, there are many reasons to be upset with how the Bills finished their season, in a 27-10 loss in the Divisional Round. Not to take anything away from the Cincinnati Bengals, as they proved yet again that they're an elite team, reaching the AFC Conference Championship two years in a row. But a 17-point loss just wasn't what anyone was anticipating, not for this Rumbling Herd.

Especially considering Buffalo's worst loss all season came by just three points. We can't help but wonder how differently the outcome could have been had Buffalo had a chance to play their originally-scheduled Week 17 matchup against Cincinnati, giving the team a good feel for what to expect come playoff time, but that's simply another excuse. Cincinnati dealt with similar conditions.

We could go on and on about a tough ending to another rollercoaster season, but that would be doing an injustice to all the bright spots we got to experience throughout the year. Instead, let's look back at the season that was. One that saw the Bills have their second 13-win season in four years. ...

      Then there were four.

The NFL's divisional round wrapped up this weekend to set up the leagues' AFC and NFC Championship games.

We started in Kansas City, where Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs took on Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite a scary ankle injury to star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs were able to hold on 27-20. Mahomes would leave the game in the first quarter but re-enter to start the second half. It is believed to be a high ankle sprain, and more updates will come throughout the week.

Saturday's second game saw the Philadelphia Eagles completely torch the New York Giants at Lincoln Financial Field by a score of 38-7.

On a snowy afternoon in Buffalo, Joe Cool came out on top. Using back-to-back touchdown drives to start the game, Cincinnati took an early lead they would never give back. The Bills cut the score 17-10 with a field goal with 7:12 left in the third quarter. With Bills fans clamoring for a defensive stop, Burrow led the Bengals on a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive lasting 6:25, taking a 24-10 lead in the fourth. A final score of 27-10 ended the Bills' season, and the franchise will have another offseason of evaluating what went wrong in the postseason.

The weekend concluded with a defensive showdown in San Francisco. Limiting Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott to 206 passing yards, the 49ers' defense looked every bit Super Bowl-ready. Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy was able to do enough, and do-it-all Christian McCaffrey found the end zone for the eighth straight week. The 49ers won 19-12.

It should be a great Championship weekend as the Cincinnati Bengals will travel to Arrowhead to play the Chiefs. The 49ers have set up a date with the Eagles and will leave their nice weather for a game in Philadelphia.  ...
