Taron Johnson is coming off an All-Pro season & is in the last year of his contract. He also has a cap hit of $12.4m this upcoming season. This is one of those perfect times where extending a tremendously important player is good for your team & also gives you the opportunity to knock a cap hit down in a season where you need it

Bills Facing 'Frightful' Contract Decisions This Offseason
The Buffalo Bills have many players about to hit free agency, and not many resources to re-sign them.

</snip>

Not only is the AFC a gauntlet, and not only are Buffalo's key players getting another year older, but the Bills' contract situation this offseason is downright frightful. Key players such as receiver Gabe Davis, linebacker Tyrel Dodson and safety Micah Hyde are set to hit free agency, and simply put, the Bills don't have the resources to bring them back.

With questions of all kinds being asked in the week leading up to Super Bowl LVIII, the difficult offseason awaiting Buffalo was a popular talking point.

"The Bills are projected to be $52 million over the salary cap, a point that multiple people on radio row brought up to me," ESPN's Jeremy Fowler writes. "They can restructure contracts or release players to soften the hit, but either way, expect a talent drain in Western New York... At the very least, the Bills will need to prioritize carefully. Navigating it will require some creativity."

Buffalo has options to create cap space, but they come at a cost. Cuts or trades obviously mean losing even more talent, while restructures would just push money out, which would hurt in the future.

Creativity?  Just load up on fifth round picks and let Beane be Beane.

  The largest problem I see is defensive line depth will take a hit and McDermott's philosophy is to have a heavy rotation there.  Depending on the level of retirements the draft could restock most of our starters.  If White can return (and that is a mighty big "if") then we could part ways with some other CB such as trading Elam.  Do we pass up a replacement for Morse if such a player is there when we pick in the first, second, or third round?  We have done well to coach up defensive backfield players taken in the late rounds but can we do it with the DL?

Elam's dead cap is $8M+.  He is immovable.

  So be it.  It all comes back to how adaptable McDermott is.  Andy Reid won the most recent SB in considerable part due to being able to adapt with the departure of Hill via a bolstered defense.  Brian Billick won in 2000 without the luxury of a strong offense although he was an offensive coach.  Would McDermott be happy if our offense got the first 2 picks in the draft assuming we do not move from our present spots.  Obviously a win is a win but would McDermott be unnerved with a defense that yielded 350 yards per game or more in 2024?

Unless he's traded...

Yes, I was joking when I typed that, but then I realized that even if the Jets don't Jet, there's still someone willing to out-Jet the Jets.

And even then...tell them Elam's a quarterback, and Jets probably gonna Jet.
