PHNOM PENH, Cambodia -- An 11-year-old girl in Cambodia has died from bird flu in the country's first known human H5N1 infection since 2014, health officials said.

Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, normally spreads in poultry and wasn’t deemed a threat to people until a 1997 outbreak among visitors to live poultry markets in Hong Kong. Most human cases worldwide have involved direct contact with infected poultry, but concerns have arisen recently about infections in a variety of mammals and the possibility the virus could evolve to spread more easily between people.

The girl from the rural southeastern province of Prey Veng became ill Feb. 16 and was sent to be treated at hospital in the capital, Phnom Penh. She was diagnosed Wednesday after suffering a fever up to 39 Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) with coughing and throat pain and died shortly afterward, the Health Ministry said in a statement Wednesday night.

Heard as well in Cambodia contact tracing for 12 people exposed to h5n1. (need a better link and info if true) Thoughts and prayers for everyone there and little girl family.

Sorry if posted.

It's been a constant fear that the H5N1 strain would evolve from zoonotic to pandemic.

But it has been zoonotic, and averages about 12 human cases a year.  So it's not exactly a bellwether case, an 11 year old girl in Cambodia dying from it.  Until consistent person-to-person transmission is identified, it's not an immediate concern.

It is, however, very likely that H5N1 will evolve at some point to become a pandemic virus, just because of how flu viruses evolve and transmit in host reservoirs (pigs and birds).

Agree. Heard other animals (like minks, sea lion's and more, just seems new those animals getting it) and some more animals getting h5n1. Possibly eating infected animals (possibly a mutation).  Still a concern in that area in a way. Until more info get's out there. Still in wait and see mode. Studying lots of h5n1 past couple weeks.

Met a knuckle dragger at the gym years ago. Real cro mag. Talked to him about his routine. He had been working on his mobility and skeletal muscle for years and had just developed a plan to workout his smooth muscles. The dude touted this workout to everyone at the gym - a slow controlled lightweight high rep scheme.

I go this day laugh at this and his thoughts of smooth muscle.
