I wish him well. He sounds troubled beyond what might seem reasonable, at least to me. He seems bitter, but the bright side is he had an opportunity most people can only dream of and hopefully he’s set for life financially.

It's one of the consequences of being a famous athlete in this world of ignorance.  Far too much of society revels in tearing them down even when it isn't true because it makes them feel better about their own failings.
