  It's been said that when Don Shula was on the competition committee during the 1970's that he tried to get as many northern teams as possible in south Florida during September and early October and have Miami play their AFC East rivals before November.  This was to maximize the climate advantage that Miami had in terms of being accustomed to the heat and humidity and to deny any advantage that a northern team had in below freezing temps and snow.

I hated Don Shula.  Refs helped them on the field too.
