Oh, it wasn't rigged in his favor. I'm pretty sure he gave up damn near everything else to keep the pension.

When my parents got divorced, my dad offered to buy out my mom's half the house.  Mom was certain she was getting ripped off, so she demanded half the future (ten years after the divorce settled) market value of the house.

 

That turned into a vicious month-long negotiation, until I suggested dad simply ask "Okay, how much is the house worth ten years from now?"  That one question brought the discussion to a screeching halt.

 

I was amazed that three adults - two lawyers and my dad - and my mother (who's still the oldest 14-year old you'll ever meet) spent a month arguing the topic without asking that simple question.  Was also surprised it worked, since NY is pretty much rigged to make sure the woman gets everything.
