I will tell you...I was in the Loma Prieta quake back in 1989.  The facility I was designed on shock absorbers with some other "earthquake proof" stuff in place.  As bad as that earthquake was, I've been in numerous 4-5.5 quakes since that were much more violent, despite being closer to the epicenter.  I've seen people knocked off their feet more than once.
