Ann
The first time we were in Sorrento, we were having a drink on the terrace of the rooftop bar. There was this big, dark blob taking up a lot of room in the sky. It was Mount Vesuvius. The last time we went to Italy, we went to Pompeii. Advice: go before you are 40. They are nutty about not touching anything, and walking the stones and paths is not easy. If you have a baby stroller, walker, or need a cane, forgetaboutit. When we were in Sicily (same trip as Pompeii) we got to watch Mount Etna spit and burp (a lot). It erupted last month. The photo of Mt Etna was taken from up in the mountains in a village called Taormina. Those grapes are on Mt Etna. Grape growing and (pretty darned decent) wine making can happen on Mt Etna due to the micro-climate. It is also very fertile soil.
GG1
These are both within the Ring of Fire, and are probably related. Also it's my pet theory of why ocean waters are warming, especially with little scientific knowledge of true underwater eruptions.

I have thought for a long time that it is the underwater volcanoes that are not only erupting but building land mass that alters the deep sea currents, which in turn is altering the Jet Stream. My curiosity got peaked by all the stories about the Great Barrier Reef decaying due to warming waters, which was naturally attributed to global warming. Yet there's little discussion of massive eruptions surrounding New Zealand starting in 2012. You'd figure scientists would study both, if for the very least, eliminate one of the causes.

Such nonsense. If the oceans really were warming up due to volcanic activity, there would be no reason to engage in policies designed to radically redistribute wealth. Dammit, man, I need the government to institute programs so that I get paid to be unwilling to work, in the name of saving the environment!
