Jones is basically a 2-down guy but you cannot block him regularly with one dude - he's a big, strong people mover.

I think Beane could have offered Bates a 2-3 year deal valued at $4-5M AAV if they wanted him back, and not allowed him to test FA.  It seems that Kromer may not be sold on him.  The Bears have a lot of cap space and can structure an offer that the Bills will have a tough time matching.

Beane has explained how he approaches FA a few times - he doesn't mind letting "replaceable" (my word, not his) players test the market because as we've seen, many times they end up coming back for less money. 

 

Many players do want to know if someone is willing to overpay them, especially if it's their one kick at the can.
