Pitman says orcas are “intelligent, social creatures” and nothing they do surprises him anymore.

Not on Facebook, but you will occasionally see them singing baritone in barbershop quartets in Skokie.

About being autistic

Quote

During this time, the neurodiversity movement arose. A key tenet of this movement’s ideology is that autism is not the result of a defective brain, but simply the result of a brain that is differently wired. Accordingly, if autism is a disability at all, it is only because of societal constraints and not because autism is an intrinsic medical condition.

It's really difficult to understate how dangerous a paradigm this is.  The difference between "behavior" and "mental illness" is the degree to which behavior inhibits functioning in everyday life.  If you have an inability to deal with the grocery store being out of your favorite flavor ice cream (which is an extreme but realistic symptom of Asperger's), that's not a problem with society's constraints, that's an indication that your neurodiversity needs to be addressed via medication or therapy so you can function around neurotypicals.

I find value in the concept of "neurodiversity," but it's application in the "neurodiversity movement" is horrendous.  It promotes an "I'm special, and everyone must compensate" attitude that fosters narcissism at the expense of mental health.

Covid and the ‘Hygiene Hypothesis’. Measures like masking and social distancing may be doing long-term damage to our immune systems.

It's been decades in the making, with the start of the whole "hypoallergenic" and "anti-bacterial" movement.  The hyper-sanitization movement caused by COVID is just a natural progression, not novel in and of itself.  (And a reminder: useless.  CDC published research in April of last year showing that COVID does not survive on surfaces for more than a few minutes, and repeated sanitization of surfaces is pointless.  Doesn't stop the theater.)

It's a garbage meta-study.   It should be ignored.

The gist of the story is that Congress is dancing on the wrong line of the "Bill of Attainder" clause of the Constitution and setting a bad precedent.

The weakness of that argument isn't so much the observation of the Attainder clause, but that it's setting a precedent.  That was arguably set with the Valachi hearings 60 years ago.

'Biggest breakthrough' on pancreatic cancer is on the horizon as scientists hail two-in-one treatment that could even CURE the disease

by Fiona Macrae

Original Article

Scientists are on the cusp of the 'biggest ever' breakthrough in the treatment of pancreatic cancer.UK researchers have developed a two-in-one treatment that could dramatically improve survival and even cure the disease, which is one of the deadliest cancers.Survival rates for pancreatic cancer have barely improved in the last 50 years and it has the worst prognosis of any common cancer. In tests, mice given the new therapy – a combination of two treatments already used in hospitals – lived up to 40 per cent longer.

First...#justsayinmice.

Second...the headline's a lie.  It didn't even cure the mice.

Third, and most importantly...if the news story is published before the research paper, the research is garbage.  Always.

Tampering with their genomes...that should require oversight, but be careful what you wish for.  Certain countries' bioweapons programs had plenty of "oversight," and killed plenty of people.
