Hiring subcontractors

But looming over the project, which has not received all its final approvals yet, is recent concern expressed by local union leadership over the potential use of out-of-town contractors and material distributors on some of the stadium work.

But Brown is worried about the use of materials and services from outside the state and even country. In an email obtained by The Buffalo News, he pointed specifically to plans for laying precast brick assembled in Canada for the stadium exterior. He's also heard out-of-town contractors will be handling the plumbing and electrical work.

“It’s our job to make sure we create opportunities and open the door, and it’s your job to walk through the door,” Deborah Pereira, vice president and program CEO at Gilbane, said at a December meeting for potential contractors for the new stadium.

Meanwhile, Buffalo’s new stadium seems in limbo for myriad reasons.

Start with the fact the Bills, long ago, made it clear they would not sign a lease extension with Erie County for 2023 unless a stadium deal is in place.

Right now it is not, and the current lease expires in July.

Meanwhile, it’s delay after delay with optimistic-sounding press releases but without explaining what the “progress” might actually be. And it seems the Erie County media is reluctant to push back on those say-nothing updates, maybe feeling criticism and investigation would only gum up construction.

What’s certain is there are obstacles in getting the lease signed and the stadium approved with an April 2026 completion date.

Local unions are critical of the use of out-of-town contractors and material distributors. Also at issue is the use of Canadian precast brick rather than hand-placed brick by area masons. Plus, it’s rumored that out-of-town contractors will handle the plumbing and electrical work.

The result is that the Buffalo Building Trades Council will not support the stadium project unless changes are made.

And, finally, there’s one other not insignificant factor.

Last June, Kim Pegula, wife of Terry and co-owner of the Bills, Sabres and Pegula Sports & Entertainment, suffered a cardiac arrest. And though she was resuscitated and is now in rehab, her presidency of the sports teams and PS&E is over due to the effect of the cardiac issue on her brain and communication skills, according to her daughter Jessica, a star on the Women’s Tennis Association Tour.

I want them to install a giant gimbal at mid-50 yard line under the field. When The Bills have the ball, the field tilts down toward the goal line they're advancing toward. When their opponent has the ball, the filed tilts up toward the goal line they are advancing toward. They could increase the height variance depending on how much we hate the opposing team.

As stadium construction begins, Bills executive Ron Raccuia says 2023 parking will be mostly the same

Buffalo Bills executive vice president/chief operating officer Ron Raccuia has a message for fans who want to park at home games over the next three years while construction of the new stadium is underway across the street from Highmark Stadium: Be patient in 2024-25.

During an interview with The Buffalo News at the NFL’s annual meeting, Raccuia laid out the parking logistics.

“We don’t think we’re going to reduce much of anything this year – 2023 should have little-to-no impact for the regular fans,” he said. “Our overriding philosophy is the more spots we can have for our fans, the better. We may lose some things (this year) by potentially reducing or eliminating some of the RV spots.”

The Bills will move staff parking off site and Raccuia said the team will be “very thoughtful in making sure we have enough spots for our fans as this progresses.”
Raccuia said the parking situation “will change from (this year) to 2024 and then in 2025, it will be a little more difficult.”

When the new stadium is scheduled to open in 2026, Raccuia said the existing Highmark Stadium location will have parking spots “until the (land) is developed and we’ll have more parking spots by a few hundred.”

A few hundred million here, a few hundred million there... pretty soon it adds up and you are talking real money!

pretty impressive

140 mil increase before a shovel hits the ground

and the union change orders start to hit

the cost of those PSL's will just keep going up to cover the overruns
