It's pretty weird.

 

Any body that has angular momentum precesses around the axis of rotation.  So a jet would move around naturally, in a specific pattern.  But not necessarily drastically.

 

Neutron stars can have jets, and they can experience sudden and drastic changes in the axis of rotation.  They can have "star quakes," where the surface of the body changes - such as a ridge about a quarter-inch high suddenly shifting.  That sort of change in a body as compact and as fast-spinning as a neutron star can cause a massive change in the angular momentum.  That's been witnessed before.

 

But with a black hole...it doesn't have a "surface" to shift.  Black holes are less "objects" than they are "mathematical abstractions of discontinuities in general relativity."  They're surrounded by objects - light, matter.  But we don't observe them directly, only by the effects on the objects surrounding them (gravitational lensing, frame dragging, accretion disks and jets).  I know of no theoretical basis for a sudden change in angular momentum of a black hole.  

 

Doesn't mean there isn't one - I'm about 30 years behind that field of study.  But its rare I can't even conceive of one.  I'm going to have to read that paper, and drag out some of my old textbooks.
