Bills free-agent targets: Quarterbacks

Because Matt Barkley likely will be lost to free agency, the Buffalo Bills will be looking to add another quarterback this offseason.

The only real question is how they will handle it, which will have an awful lot to do with how they evaluate Jake Fromm. ...

... because there was no way Fromm could have proved much one way or another in his first season, the Bills might not want to take any chances with the backup quarterback spot, which is widely considered the second most important position in sports.

So there's a good chance they fill the void in free agency, with Fromm remaining the No. 3.

If that's the case, here are some potential targets: ...

They go on to list Tyrod Taylor, Andy Dalton and Jacoby Brissett

The author's logic doesn't make sense.   If Bills lose Barkley to FA because he may cost too much, the potential targets should command much more hefty salaries because they've accomplished much more in the league than Barkley and are viewed as better backups.

Hopefully this COVID crap is over and we can get an honest evaluation of Fromm and not need another QB.

When your only discussing the back-up QB options in the off-season, that is a nice change for Buffalo.

Jake Fromm, Matt Barkley or both? Bills have decision to make at backup QB

</snip>

Based on Beane's explanation, Fromm will return to the team in 2021, which is obvious for a player at a prime position in the second year of a rookie contract. The real question is whether Buffalo believes Fromm is ready to be Allen's primary backup, or if he needs another year learning alongside Barkley.

</snip>

On Jan. 26, the Bills signed journeyman Davis Webb, who has spent time on their practice squad, to a futures contract, but it might be worth it to bring Barkley back on a one-year deal. It would provide insurance as they evaluate Fromm throughout training camp. Assuming there's a normal preseason, if Fromm plays well enough to instill confidence in him, the Bills could cut Barkley before the season.

If not, Barkley would spend his fourth straight season with the Bills; or, Buffalo can go in a different direction.

Fromm will obviously return, but Beane can opt for a "high-end two," as ESPN analyst Matt Bowen puts it -- a player like A.J. McCarron, C.J. Beathard or Nick Mullens.

QB Room Rankings: Breaking Down All 32 teams to rank their QB Room

NFL Heads breaks down the quarterbacks in the NFL, and determines which QB room is the best!
By: NFLHeads2020

1.     Buffalo Bills

Josh Allen, Mitch Trubisky, Jake Fromm, Davis Webb

Immediately when we get into this list there will probably be controversy, so let me explain. Not only does a quarterback room rely on the starter, it relies on the backups behind him, which will make some of these ratings make more sense. Josh Allen keeps improving every year, and having Mitch Trubisky as a backup is definitely not the worst option at backup by any stretch, especially since some teams would have probably brought him in for a QB competition. Jake Fromm could be a promising young player, and if Davis Webb is buried at fourth, they are definitely safe.

Regardless of what really happened, Trubisky is in the best possible position atm. He does need to take a step back and concentrate on developing his game at an NFL level. Daboll and the Bills are at the top of that list right now.

Buffalo Bills most interesting man? Backup QB Davis Webb may take the cake

</snip>

He was supposed to be the heir apparent to Eli Manning, but instead – two teams later and still without an NFL snap to his name - he’s the fourth string quarterback for the Buffalo Bills.

Webb, 26, the son of a high school coach who has long enjoyed a play sheet and film session just as much as throwing a touchdown pass, has found a way to be an invaluable piece for the Bills. He hasn’t given up on his dream to play quarterback in the NFL but he’s working while he waits.

He has a new goal – to coach. And toward that end he invests hours upon hours watching video, breaking down plays and learning – ever learning – from the Bills staff.

A WEEK IN THE LIFE

CBS Sports has been running a series about the best five players at every pick (1-32). Hopefully, when they rerun this series in 20 years the Bills also have the best selection ever at pick #7. 🙂

The top five at pick #14 included this quarterback:

Ranking the best NFL draft picks of all time: Jim Kelly headlines top five taken at No. 14

1. Jim Kelly, quarterback

1983 NFL Draft: Round 1, No. 14 (Miami)
Team(s): Buffalo Bills (1986-1996)

This was a pretty clear selection after combing through all the of the greats to be picked at No. 14. The only blemish on Kelly's résumé is, of course, the lack of a Super Bowl title. The Bills legend was able to reach the big game in four consecutive years but was unfortunately unable to fully get Buffalo over the hump. Other than that, Kelly's career was superb and had his club as a perennial playoff contender, reaching the postseason in eight of his 11 seasons. Kelly was the triggerman behind the K-Gun no-huddle offense that took the league by storm and found tremendous success through the air. For his career, he threw for nearly 35,500 yards, which is quite impressive considering the era in which he was playing and made Kelly one of the key arcs to the modern passing attack that we see in the NFL.

He was named to the Pro Bowl five times throughout his career and received two All-Pro nods. His No. 12 is retired by the Buffalo Bills, is a member of the franchise's Wall of Fame and is currently the club's all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns. Kelly was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame back in 2002, marking the cherry on top of what is growing into one of the more underrated careers in NFL history.
