Ron Desantis - the Great Satan

Is the world ready for President DeSantis and a Floridian foreign policy? (msn.com)

But the results on Tuesday opened up another possibility: President DeSantis. What would that mean for the world? In some ways, that may seem more palatable to many than Trump or another Trumpian alternative. But DeSantis would also be the United States’ first Florida-born president — and if the Democrats give up the Sunshine State to the Republicans, the wider impact on U.S. foreign policy could be significant.

Here are three things to consider:

DeSantis is not Trump. He may not always act like it, but DeSantis’s résumé is more of a run-of-the-mill Republican civil servant than the bombastic-businessman-turned-political-arsonist Trump.

In some ways, DeSantis’s background makes him look closer to former secretary of state Mike Pompeo, whose more interventionist leanings were sometimes at odds with Trump.

Despite a relatively humble upbringing, DeSantis went from Jacksonville to Yale, before going on to Harvard Law School. He went on to work as a lawyer for the U.S. Navy, serving at the base in Guantánamo Bay and deploying to Iraq. When he returned, he served as a federal prosecutor before winning two terms in the House.

It’s a fairly typical career path for an American politician. Reflecting that, DeSantis has largely focused on domestic policy in the House and later as governor, but most of what he has said about foreign policy fits well within preexisting norms, rather than Trump’s often ad hoc style.

DeSantis has condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and was critical of President Biden’s decision to pull out of Afghanistan. He is also strongly opposed to traditional U.S. foes like Iran, notably opposing the nuclear deal with that country, as well as newer rivals like China, and has pledged to be “the most pro-Israel governor in America.

He claims to not be a fan of rules and big government. The Florida governor first came to real national attention when he pushed a controversial laissez-faire approach to covid-19. That approach put DeSantis at odds with World Health Organization guidance, even if it wasn’t quite as combative as Trump’s move to pull the United States out of that body. (Most accounts of Florida’s time during the pandemic suggest DeSantis’s policies were neither the success he portrayed them as nor the disaster his critics feared).

Without a parody marking, it gets reported, they get banned (unless the guy's name really is Ron DeSantis, which is always possible)

How did validating someone's identity for a blue check ever work?  Plus, a blue check doesn't mean you're not a &#%$ing tool.

I never really trusted them.

Well, from what we are learning, if you paid a kickback to some schlump, they made it happen.

It used to be a driver's license. The rich and famous could get verified via their PR people (who had a direct line to Twitter).  Same type of deal for political figures via their campaign mangers (which seemed to have gone by the wayside as more Republican elected officials and candidates ended up unverified the last two cycles 🤔).

Yeah it’s outside actors that are stirring shit not the orange narcissist in chief.

🤔

It's got to be outside actors.  There's no way he came up with "Ron DeSanctimonious" on his own.

That's pretty good..."Ron DeSanctimonious."  Wish I'd thought of it.

Top Florida lawmakers want to change state law so DeSantis can run for president in 2024 without resigning as governor (msn.com)

Top Republicans in the Florida legislature said Tuesday that they'd be willing to change state election law so that Gov. Ron DeSantis could run for president without resigning from his current job.

DeSantis may have to resign either if decides to run for president, if he were to secure the GOP nomination, or if he wins the presidency. The text of the law reads, "Any officer who qualifies for federal public office must resign from the office he or she presently holds if the terms, or any part thereof, run concurrently with each other."

Either way, a clarification from the legislature would make it easier for DeSantis to run for president and return to his post in the governor's mansion if he doesn't succeed. The legislature loosened the law in 2008 when then-Gov. Charlie Crist, a former Republican, was a running mate contender for GOP presidential candidate John McCain — but then changed it back in 2010.

That is fraught with complexities related to determining the use of state resources in a presidential campaign.  Or, conversely, the use of federal resources by a sitting governor (specifically thinking the Secret Service protection he would be entitled to if he wins the primary.)

And in either or both cases he'd get slammed by the DNC for it in any sort of campaign, regardless of the legalities.

I agree.  But a sensible law would temporarily suspend a governor's authority and vest it in the Lt. Governor pending the election outcome, to avoid most of the conflicts of interest.

agreed

that's what the "return" meant

but at what point do you suspend his authority?

- declares to run?

- wins nomination?

can't wait for the vax for the "woke mind virus"

https://www.zerohedge.com/political/blueprint-success-desantis-credits-floridas-red-wave-leadership-against-woke-mind-virus

At a time when Republicans are questioning what happened to the promised midterm elections’ “red wave” and what to do going forward, DeSantis clearly and elegantly stated that in Florida, Republicans are appealing to freedom, fighting against the “woke mind virus,” and implementing common-sense legislation. As a result, Republicans, Independents, and Democrats voted for a red wave in Florida.

“We won, by double digits, Miami-Dade County!” DeSantis said of his Republican win in the previously Democrat stronghold.

He added that if Republicans want to win future elections, they must follow his example in Florida.

Blueprint to Win

According to DeSantis, Republicans were successful in Florida’s midterm elections because “Florida really has a blueprint for success.” Specifically, he explained that his “blueprint” includes exercising authentic leadership that doesn’t bend to the shifting whims of society.

“The job of a leader is not to stick your finger in the wind and try to contort yourself to wherever public opinion may be trending at any given moment. No, the job of a leader is to set out a vision. To execute that vision. To show people that it’s the right vision, and to deliver concrete results. And when you do that, the people respond,” DeSantis stated.
