Other news; one of my hens went broody. I removed her from the nesting box twice but she obviously had the itch to be a mother so I marked 2 eggs and added them to her nest. She should hatch these in the next few days.

Dog is still sick. Now she has fleas and itching like crazy. It's my fault. I skipped May and June Frontline flea meds because of her vomiting and the amount of meds the vet put her on to try and curb the regurgitation etc. I did not want to put her body through so many meds and now she has fleas. Never had fleas in the house before and I don't see them or feel them but obviously they are there.

Of course; the specialists are months out. I mean months. We can't get to dermatology until  December for a simple skin allergy test. The meds for the skin stuff isn't working. So no allergy test. What I did was called around to 20 other vets within an hour and a half of us and found someone to do the blood allergy test without a referral. They told me 36-48 hour turn around. I drove there with the dog and they took the blood for the allergy test; tried to sell me on a bunch of products which I declined. Its been a week and the story now is "the lab is 2-3 weeks behind". I'm not happy about that.

The gastro specialist was only a month and half wait. That is coming up August 15th. I'm going to be hot mad if we show up for just a consult and then they push any procedure out months.

We have spent almost $3000 in the past month or so with vet trips, food trials, tests and scans, medications. Trying to fix this but I'm not doing a very good job.  I need to take all the failed food trials to the local rescue. Bedroom is full of bags and cans.

Hit the emergency room of your local veterinary hospital. It will push her to the front of the line. Your best bet is a teaching vet hospital like Cornell or Gainesville as they have every specialty on-site. The teaching hospitals are also a lot cheaper than going to a private vet hospital.

Thanks! We did get a referral to state university. So we are trying that.

Friend messaged me on Facebook.

We lost that property by $10,000. The buyers didn’t have 30% down for land so that’s what caused the delay. They had to find a new lender. 4 married men; wives not on the deed, signed that they all plan on occupying the property and got a loan for almost the entire amount.

For a tree nursery business.

On to the next….. happy Saturday. My broody hen should be a momma at some point the next couple days.

So they were highly leveraged to make the deal happen?  Not sitting too well if a prolonged economic downturn happens.

Yeah, that’s what I’m gathering from that info. Not a good place to be in if they had to stretch that far. Trees don’t turn profit for a good while I wouldn’t assume.

We turn a major profit on even seedlings but then again we sell mainly tropicals and lots of rare stuff right now.

Received a message on Facebook yesterday from a guy who saw my land search post. There is 28 acres currently being farmed, on their road. Gave me the owners information. I spoke with him last night. Going to look at it on Friday. Farming contract runs through the end of the year.

I have nom issue with leasing. I am a firm believer in learning from those who are already doing the things you want to do. This property is surrounded by farming. Each neighbor has their own. So, this could be an interesting prospect. By leasing to one of them; I could ask for use of some equipment and learning as part of the lease instead of money.

It has a spring fed pond but needs work. The asking price of this one is good for the area. Only 5 homes on this road. Comes with some barns but will need work. The home that is there is livable. We would be building ours so maybe I would rent that. Or use it as a storefront if that takes off. We shall see.

You don't have to lease the entire portion, either. Draw it back a few acres - but make sure you keep a few acres that are already cleaned and have been tilled. You can rent farm equipment, or pay a farmer to do the tilling and planting for you (if you cannot borrow equipment).

Good luck with this parcel!

Thanks! My wife and I discussed this last night and we think we know the person who is farming it. I couldn't recall his name but we get hay from a guy with farming leases on that road. If that is the case; easy peasy.

Your own food making your own food is so awesome.

We had a broody hen sitting on some eggs recently, and only one of them hatched. We were thrilled though, because it was the first time for us. We went back the next morning and the chick was gone.  I mean GONE. No sign of it anywhere. Weird as hell.

It took me a little while to convince my wife that it would be beneficial for us if we were as self sufficient as possible. Even just for our health. I truly feel that the greatest natural healing comes from the earth and nature in general. Now that she has started seeing the world for what it truly is, she's receptive. Not that the world isn't full of beautiful people and beautiful things; because it is. But, the paths that bad people are forcing the world to take cannot end in a good place. It's time for people to revert to lost ways of thinking; we versus they, and work together.

I was not aware that rats and large mice will also carry a chick away. Squirrels too if there is not enough food. Our chicks are doing ok. This weekend I am going to build them a bigger containment in the coop for the babies and the momma.

Same scenario in my house, but the other way around. I essentially accommodated my wife's interests in things that took us both to places of discomfort at first. Put more specifically, when my wife and I first met over 25 years ago, my electric drill was made by Singer and my measuring tape comprised multiple 6" rulers connected with hinges that let you fold it up. We couldn't keep succulents alive.

I've really come to embrace all that we're doing now on our property and we take a lot of satisfaction of having done it before things got as bad as they are right now, especially as we see it getting worse.

And all it costs me is a weekly stipend of "Yes, dear, you were right about all of this."

My wife and I are coming up on 20 years. If I am honest with myself, she has been right more than she has been wrong but I've had my share of victories and I will not sell myself short on those 🤣

We looked at the most recent property and not sure what we are going to do. It got a contract with a farmer through mid year next year and the soil is very rocky. To the point of the inability to be graded without rocks the size of small houses being removed in many places. The contract will delay our home building process until about this time next year. there is corn on it now. The price he wants is competitive. But; there is also an old home that will be filled with asbestos and will cost money to be removed. The barn and buildings on there are salvageable in some areas but a couple are being held up by termites holding hands.

On one hand, my wife wants to move away. On the other she grew up here and she doesn't. She says she won't be able to live in her parents house but is not opposed to building here. I am not trying to force her into anything and have her regret it.  We may see about buying up 8 acres behind us which would take us further off the road. We made a list last night of the likes and dislikes about where we are. I can handle the crossdressing uncle walking across the field in a sun dress. I cannot handle the schizophrenic nephew sitting on the porch and singing (Screaming. Its screaming. Off key, high pitched screaming) I despise the traffic. Since they turned the road into 4 lanes its unbearable. I am out walking through the garden at 5:30am on Saturday and some dentist with a mid life crisis Mustang with shit pipes on it decides to hammer down in front of the house. I cant even sit on the porch on Sunday morning as the sun comes up and enjoy my coffee. Tractor trailers hit their jakes just before they get to our house and ride them to the bottom of the hill...day and night. Proximity to all the important places is good and we are near family. Despite their quirkiness, we do care about them all and do a lot to help them as I am the only able bodied male with any sense God gave shoelaces. I can do all I need to do for our homestead if we can get back on those 8 acres. Won't be the scale I wanted to get off the corporate wagon but oh well. Praying about it and just going to let it be.
