Torrent of Taxes Sends New Yorkers Fleeing on Southbound Expressway

How the mighty have fallen. The latest Census Bureau data show the Empire State’s population drain continues, as people flee New York in droves.

From July 2021 to July 2022, 300,000 more people moved out of the state than moved in. New York had the largest population loss—in both percentage and absolute terms—experienced by any state during that period.

Sadly, this was both predictable and preventable.

In March 2021, a study of New York found that its already staggeringly high tax burden had worsened due to an increase in the top marginal tax rate to almost 15% for those in New York City. The study projected that the flood of people leaving would only accelerate—and it did.

Even before that study, the Empire State lost so many people that it cost New York a seat in Congress after the 2020 census. This exodus is a direct response to New York’s obscenely high taxes.

Just how bad is it? Compared with other states, New Yorkers:

  • Pay the highest total tax burden and highest share of personal income (14%) in taxes.
  • Endure the second-worst overall business-tax climate.
  • Face the highest individual income-tax rate and income-tax collections per capita.
  • Pay the second-highest state and local corporate income tax collections per capita.
  • Have the fourth-highest property taxes and local sales-tax rate (on average).
  • Pay the highest cigarette taxes and ninth-highest gasoline taxes.
  • Pay the sixth-highest capital-stock tax rate.
  • Are tied for third-highest estate-tax rate.

And what do New Yorkers get for all these taxes? Roads smooth as glass? The best airports in the world? Trains running on time? Bulletproof electric grid and water infrastructure? Ample police to maintain safety and order?

Not even close.

 Wasn't the only factor, but it certainly was a contributing factor.

Having discussions with my dad now - approaching 80 - about moving back up there so he has someone close, or him moving down here.

Not that Maryland's a tax haven, and I'd love to be back in WNY for many reasons...but it always ends up being "NFW I'm paying those taxes."

Then there's the fines that may still be outstanding from '98, for not having insurance on a car I didn't own in a state I didn't live (for which NYS suspended a driver's license I didn't have.)  Which non-existent suspended driver's license they used as an excuse to call me a NYS resident and try to levy income tax on me.

So really, &#%$ NYS.

That's all completely insane.  Tying minimum wage to inflation?  That'll end up driving inflation in a vicious cycle.  Forcing municipalities to increase housing stocks?  That's not how real estate works...and by the way, your state population is declining.  I'm guessing cabbies will ignore the lower NYC speed limit the same way they ignore the current one?

I think the real reason "true socialism has never been tried" is because true socialists are &#%$ing idiots.

For once, an article is portraying a bill dead-on accurately.

And that bill would be hilarious if it weren't so dangerous.  It basically codifies that a man incarcerated in a women's prison is free to rape a woman in prison, because for the woman to complain would be transphobic.

Staying in prison past your release to find your prison wife who disappeared in to the system?

Cabbies and especially rideshare drivers do not ignore the 25 mph local streets limit.  The City installed at least a thousand speed cameras.  Also, I suspect that a lot of those cars are equipped with “safe driver” equipment from their insurance companies. Whether those two are the reasons or not, you don’t see a lot of speeding on side streets in the City.

Driving 25 was really difficult to get used to.  All in all, slower moving down side streets isn’t the end of the world.

I’m certainly not a big advocate for more regulations.  However if the City actually wanted to make the streets safer then they’d require licenses for bicyclists and especially scooter riders and e-bike delivery people. They’re presently a scourge.  There are finally enough of them to make them “share” the road with cars and pedestrians.

A couple years ago there was talk of enforcing 2-wheelers more frequently.  deBlasio decided that he didn’t want the (likely undocumented) delivery workers to be harassed because they’re already scared of being deported.  The Mayor’s idea was to issue violations to the restaurant owners who employ the offending rider.  So very few restaurants use their own people.  They all use doordash or Uber eats to make deliveries. And so the enforcement talk went out the window.

Clean Slate Act.

Automatically seals criminal records for just about any NYS conviction . 3 years after Misdemeanor. 7 years after felony.

So now there will probably be some private company that gats a sweetheart deal to mine and keep the records before they're sealed -- so they could sell the info to companies or individuals who want to know about someone.
