Easily better than Marchibroda?  Not sure that's true.

The K-Gun was very innovative for its day.

Meh.  Wyche's offense in that time frame was basically what we stole and it really was superior...the BILLS just had better players.  I would be surprised if the BILLS offensive playbook was more than 10 plays most weeks.  They just ran them from different formations.  The pace and Kelly's willingness to hand the ball off was more the reason for success than the scheming.

The only time I remember them doing anything that I'd consider novel was the AFC Championship game against Miami when they ran some combination stuff (screens and actions off) that was setup in the earlier games that season.

Ted wasn't really even my second choice (Chan Gailey) but there isn't much of a list after him.

Close on the 10 plays.  It was actually 12 that Kelly would call from, but like the Gibbs offense which was essentially 3 plays out of tons of packages & formations, they'd run the plays out of various formations & blocking.

Was never impressed w/ Wyche's "sugar huddle" because it was designed to let the Bengals change personnel while keeping the D in a single package.  Also, his teams consistently were good 1 year & terrible the next & that w/ the scheduling advantage that came from being in the AFC's 4 team division.  (Every single year got the 5th place teams even though at least 1, if not all the division's, teams were usually trash.  Still remember NBC valley washing the division when everybody was 0.500 or worse 2/3's of the way through "because they all have to play each other."  Well, fug, they only have 6 division games.  If they're so great why are they losing in the other 10 games?)

Because the Brown family makes Ralph look like Elon Musk (both financially and strategically).

The only skill player on that offense that could have played for the BILLS was James Brooks.  Everyone else was literally "just a guy."

Marchibroda was a frigging genius

He was able to implement an offense that was extremely effective using a minimum of plays, which enabled them to execute them at an extremely high level. He also maximized the skills of both Kelly and Thomas, which is what you want your OC to do.

More importantly he found a scheme in the hurry up, no huddle, which enabled him to turn a middle of the road offensive line into a highly effective unit by creating a unique skill which wasn't previously utilized. He made their endurance the key component in over whelming standard defenses. Without the endurance, the line wasn't Super Bowl caliber after Wolford left, which was evidenced anytime they tried to run without the hurry up.

and most of all, he was able to implement the hurry up against the adamant protests of his head coach.  Marv was not a big fan, which is not surprising with his back ground in the single wing.

And this is why Dolphin fans cry everyday as of late.  Their glory days were when the AFC was loaded with inept owners such as the Sullivan's, Paul Brown, early Leon Hess, Bob Irsay, Bud Adams, Gene Klein, Ralph, and down the line.  The perfect season team most likely would have never happened if their competition had competent owners.  The Bills that year came closest to derailing that but the Dolphins scored very late in that game to insure a victory.  Marino would have been considerably less dominant.  Dolphins fans say that they have been cursed the last 20 years but it was more like they were blessed the first 25 years they existed.  Then they fell back and became part of the pack.

Good breakdown by Warner:

I want Warner to break down Josh Allen’s film every week, just like he does here. Make it a Zoom call. Have Allen, the QB coach, and the WR coach in on the call. Terry Pegula can pay Warner whatever amount necessary to make this happen. Allen is a great quarterback now. Coaching like this would cause him to become even better. 😀

The athletic

Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, gold standards at QB: Our NFL Persons of the Year

</snip>

It’s their league now. That has become abundantly clear this season as Mahomes, 27, and Allen, 26, both assumed even heavier loads of responsibility for their franchises — again and again, answering the call. Meanwhile, with an assist from Father Time, Mahomes and Allen have knocked Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers from their long-held perches. The kids have strengthened their stranglehold on the league while leaving each living legend to grasp for fading shreds of glory.

That play was quite the rollercoaster ride. Live I was sure he broke the plane, then there was no whistle or signal and the ball kept going backward and I’m thinking we’re going to give up a defensive conversion, then finally the ball is recovered and blown dead and I’m just relieved we’re still only down by two. Network goes to commercial without even mentioning the possibility of a review, and then comes back to the ruling being reversed.
