*Patriots hit pause at QB with Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham ... for now

1. QB checkpoints: Timing and leverage are often two of the most important factors for striking deals, and they are at the heart of the *Patriots' current quarterback decision-making approach.

Coach Bill Belichick is sometimes fond of saying "Last time I checked, our first game isn't until September." That basically explains why the *Patriots are pressing the QB "pause" button at the moment, with owner Robert Kraft expressing support for Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham in 2021, while also acknowledging the team has to solidify the position long-term.

Here are three key checkpoints to watch:

1. Draft (April 29-May 1): Selecting at No. 15 in the 2021 NFL draft he *Patriots likely won't be in position to land a top prospect unless they move up. ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay has them jumping to No. 11 to pick Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields in his most recent mock draft. But the QB class goes beyond the top five of Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Trey Lance and Fields. And if the *Patriots follow a path similar to what they did in 2014 with Jimmy Garoppolo (second round, No. 62) -- with Florida's Kyle Trask, Stanford's Davis Mills, Texas A&M's Kellen Mond and Wake Forest's Jamie Newman among the second-tier options -- they could go into 2021 with Newton/Stidham/prospect, hold firm, and see where the chips fall.

Former *Patriots executive Michael Lombardi: ‘It’s hard for me to see them drafting Justin Fields or Trey Lance’

He shared them earlier this week on his The GM Shuffle podcast, with a particular focus on the quarterback position: Lombardi noted that he has a hard time seeing the *Patriots move up the board in order to select Justin Fields or fellow QB prospect Trey Lance out of North Dakota State.

“Obviously, they have to fix the quarterback position,” Lombardi said. “Cam Newton has to play much better. Where are they with Jarrett Stidham? And can they trade up? If Mac Jones goes three, which is what we all believe to be true ... where does that all fit? That means get to four.”

“Do they like Justin Fields? I don’t think so. Do they like Trey Lance? I’m not sure, I don’t know. Just knowing how they operate, I couldn’t imagine they could get either one of Lance and Fields to a high enough point to justify trading up to get them,” he noted before explaining his thought process behind this statement.

*Patriots face difficult decision with Julian Edelman’s chronic knee troubles

Julian Edelman is going to try and gut out another season with a chronically troubled knee.

As a competitor, and one of the toughest players you’ll ever find, that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Edelman doesn’t want to retire without a fight, and another run at a championship.

The question in the coming months is what the *Patriots will ultimately choose to do with him, after adding two potential starters in free agency and perhaps another soon via the draft.

According to a source familiar with Edelman’s situation, it’s doubtful he will be able to play the entire 2021 season. The knee has already hampered him for the better part of two years.
