What do you think of the officiating in the NFL?

too much money is connected to TV contracts and gambling

NFL needs the refs to dictate and control outcomes, as directed by the league and its partners

no changes coming that will hinder their control

any perception that the NFL is a fairly contested "game" is the result of slick entertainment smoke & mirrors

The NFL has an officiating crisis.

Those aren’t just my words. Multiple people directly involved with the NFL, at the team level, have used that phrase in recent weeks. In recent days, the Monday night misadventures of Tony Corrente caused the discussion to reach the boiling point.

Yes, too much money is centered around gambling and propping up big market teams which is a direct tie to contracts.  It will be interesting to see what happens with the Steeler's if their roster gets very weak.  Given that they have a national fanbase will the league instruct refs to give Pittsburgh help to at least insure that they win most Sundays?  Hate Vince McMahon all you want but at least he does not pretend that he puts out a clean product.  The Bills having to beat the refs as well as the opponent will be a trend for the foreseeable future.  To cloud what is going on winning teams will have a flurry of penalties in the fourth quarter after the game has been secured as was seen with the Brady Era Pats.

In my view the officials are often in disarray when a penalty is indicated.

Several years ago the officials were outfitted with individual comm's systems to shorten the time needed to make the "official" indication of an infraction and the resulting penalty.  Thereby eliminating the need for the officials to gather together to share information.  In spite of the comm's systems the officials still gather to discuss the indicated infraction, penalty to be assessed, clock setting, etc.  A total waste of time; either use the comm system or remove it.

That being said regarding the time wasted by the officials; it appears there is no hope for a sense of continuity in penalty assessment.  One man's pass interference is another man's "let 'em play the game" approach.

Would that technology could eliminate the egregious errors....

you misunderstand what the comm system is for

NFL HQ is able to dictate the outcome in real time to on-field officials

Your NFL officiating conspiracies are even more awesome than your COVID vaccination conspiracies.  :classic_laugh:

Seahawks-49ers comes down to questionable missed pass interference call; NFL world reacts

Sometimes it's the calls that aren't made that are the worst ones.

NFL officiating has been, in a word, questionable this year. There have been a number of game-deciding calls made or missed that have had NFL fans, players and coaches peeved.

Exhibit 943,301: Late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's Seahawks-49ers matchup, when officials appeared to have missed a crucial pass interference call in the end zone while the 49ers were threatening to score on a third down.

Receiver Trent Sherfield was mauled by cornerback Sidney Jones off the line off scrimmage and all the way back to the end zone, when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo tried to find him for a TD.

Not that the Jets need to be hurt any more than just being the Jets hurts.

But I'm still okay with piling on.

I think the red flag usage should be extended to missed penalty calls by the officials. It would help keep the integrity of the game results where it should be IMO. It would also bring more uniform officiating from one crew to the next. Keep the same limit of red flag usage.

And games would be interminable.  They'd last longer than cricket matches.  Players would go on the COVID list in the first quarter, and be eligible to come off it in the 4th.
