Just call him Rick: Bills’ Ryan Bates creating buzz, having time of his life

</snip>

At one time or another since arriving in Buffalo, Bates has played every position on the line for the Bills. He’s been their swing tackle, swing guard and backup center. As injuries piled up on the line and starters’ level of play dropped below expectations, cries from a portion of the fan base for Bates grew louder.

This subsection of Bills Mafia is known as the “Bates Hive” online. Fans are enamored with his versatility, but more than anything else it’s been his consistency at all the spots that have piqued their curiosity for what could be if he got a real chance to play. Nothing Bates did against the Patriots is going to quiet the buzzing.

Bills coach Sean McDermott loves Bates’ attitude and the way he puts in the work, even when he wasn’t playing.

“He’s one of the first ones in the building every day,” McDermott said. “I think he’s got a great process, great habits, great routine and that sets him up for success. It’s great to see when a player or a person puts so much time into it and continues to work at it, remains patient or as patient as possible and then sees the fruits of their labor come to fruition.”

I don't pretend to know what the impetus for the Oline's showing was last week, but if including Bates going forward results that kind of output, put/keep him in coach!

A good analysis from the Athletic's, Joe Buscaglia.

If this is really so, the rest of the NFL should be worried.

The Bills have found their optimal starting O-line: All-22 film review

...Each week using the coaches’ film, The Athletic grades every Bills player based on how they performed. You can find the full explanation for the grades at the end.

What keyed the Bills to another double-digit victory, and what trends could show up in the postseason? Here are five thoughts from the All-22.

1. The Bills have finally found their optimal starting O-line

Although you have to account for the quality of the opponent, it’s difficult to ignore just how good the Bills’ offensive line was against the Falcons. The collective effort was one of the best we’ve seen all season, and even though the Falcons have one of the least impactful pass-rushing groups in the NFL, it’s in how the Bills’ offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage.

Pass blocking has long been the Bills’ strength, but they allowed only three pressures all game on 31 dropbacks. One snap illustrated their dominance as all five starters worked together to dump every Falcons pass rusher on the ground, and quarterback Josh Allen had so much time that he was able to scramble for a first down.

Center Mitch Morse, left guard Ryan Bates and right guard Daryl Williams did not allow a pressure among the three of them. They often worked together and capably handled all stunts the Falcons threw at them. The Morse and Bates duo was especially effective, with the pair doing a great job of knowing when to pass off a block and then showing the athleticism to stay in front of the looping defender.

Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins was once again one of the best players on the field. Even though he was responsible for one of the three pressures, it was his only lapse. The rest of the time, Dawkins dominated defenders with good footwork and a powerful punch to get them on the ground. Allen rarely had anything to worry about to his blind side. Dawkins has fully regained his form from last season and is an outright asset. At right tackle, Spencer Brown struggled the most of the bunch. In the first half, he missed block attempts and allowed a pair of pressures. However, he turned it around in the second half and was one of the Bills’ best over the final 30 minutes. And although it wasn’t perfect, the group had one of its best run-blocking showings of the season.

After two straight games of the Bills looking as good as they have on the offensive line, they have to be feeling great heading into the playoffs. It took a long, long time, and they’ve had to endure multiple injuries and COVID-19 cases that shuffled their combinations at times. However, after all of the movement, it appears they’ve finally found their best starting five — even if it took them until late December and early January to find it. They’ll have to hope Bates’ knee is healthy enough for him to play Sunday and in the playoffs, but he has raised the level of play at left guard since becoming a starter. The rest of the linemen seem to be in their natural positions, and the Bills also have a solid depth option in Jon Feliciano. So things are looking up with this group, perhaps for the first time all season. ...

For some reason I didn't realize Morse was 6'6" tall.  Our OLine is friggin' monsterous in reality.

A luxury you can afford when:

They’re exceptionally athletic and light footed for big men

You have a QB who stands 6’5” and isn’t regularly impeded by them, and is also an absolute athletic freak for his size, and can unimpede himself basically at will

The emergence of Ryan Bates has cast the mold of the 2022-23 line in iron. Return the Dawkins, Bates, Morse, Williams, Brown unit. Draft behind Williams.

The oline was my largest 22’ concern prior to week 11. It is now my least concern.

Morse struggled in pass pro against bigger men pushing the pocket.
Daboll finally started pulling him later in the season in the run game - which his his strength..

His other intangibles shouldn't be overlooked. I hope he returns.

Quinton feels disrespected because he was being benched and the Bills initially kept him from seeking employment elsewhere.

I wish guys like him would keep the yap shut at times like this, but on the other hand, at least the Bills didn't allow their quarterback to be sacked nine freaking times in a single game.
