This is why we don't trust news reports.

Overnight.

Exercise doesn't end until Friday, though.

And the second tweet...that tank's dug in to a firing position, not "returning to base."

"Will there be a war?  Yes...or no.  And it'll start with no warning, immediately...or at a later date."

I think all the arm waving and hand flailing has achieved it's desired objective. Electronic equipment in the Ukraine has been destroyed.

IF the Russians do walk this back, is it possible that Putin's goal was to simply scare the ever living #### out of the west to see them gain some "flexibility" in their positions?

The destruction of US servers and documents at the US Embassy was the goal of this "exercise." Mission accomplished.

I like Rogoway, but he has a very limited understanding of Russian doctrine.  That entire article is based on a false historical appraisal ("a blunt hammer") and incorrectly projecting American doctrine (sequentially, hit C3I, then establish air superiority, then invade) on to the Russian armed forces.

That's not how the Russian military works.  Not in Chechnya, not in Georgia, not in Ukraine in 2014.  Russian doctrine is to attack the entire depth simultaneously, not incrementally, and to push rapidly moving forces, supported by massive firepower, in echelon through specified narrow breakthrough points.

And it works very well, when they can apply it.  It's when they get stuck in asymmetric warfare that the doctrine breaks down.  But then, most nations' do.

This, BTW, is vaguely reminiscent of the time before WWI.  Not in specifics, but in the general sense that everyone is acting in ways that primes the region for a war, whether the parties want the war or not.

Ukraine: Russian video shows tanks leaving annexed Crimea, but NATO and the US are disputing the claim

On Wednesday, Russia's defense ministry published a video showing tanks and military vehicles leaving annexed Crimea after a drill

No, Russia's defense ministry published a video showing tanks and military vehicles driving from one place to another, and claimed they were leaving the Crimea.  There's no real way to know if the claim is true.
