Important things to know as NY Jets open training camp

From Zach Wilson's contract to the full practice schedule, here are the top things to know as the NY Jets begin their 2021 training camp.

Zach Wilson’s contract

As the New York Jets report to training camp today, Zach Wilson remains the team’s only unsigned rookie out of Joe Douglas‘ 10-player 2021 draft class. Wilson was in Southern California as recently as Monday afternoon, according to his Instagram.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini has reported that it appears Wilson’s team and the Jets are disputing over offset language in his contract. If offset language is present in a contract, the team recoups some money in the event that the player is released prior to the conclusion of the deal.

San Francisco 49ers' Trey Lance signs rookie deal; New York Jets' Zach Wilson last unsigned top pick

</snip>

Wilson's contract is slotted at $35.15 million over four years, including a $22.9 million signing bonus, but the two sides are squabbling over offset language.

The Jets include an offset in every contract, which provides financial protection if they release the player before the contract is complete. This isn't an unusual stance. It's believed that 30 of the 32 teams typically include an offset with contracts that have guaranteed money. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Rams are the only teams that typically don't include offset language in their contracts.

An offset clause allows a team to cut a player before the end of his four-year contract is completed and have the remaining money reduced by the amount of his next contract. This is deeply rooted in the Jets' negotiating philosophy, and they don't want to create a precedent.

Without an offset, a cut player collects the guarantee from his old team, plus the money he receives from his new team -- aka double dipping.

I have no idea what the Jets have in Zach Wilson, but I've watched enough football to know Saleh is making a mistake not getting a seasoned backup QB in the locker room. I've come to learn there are so many things a rookie first-round quarterback has to learn beyond the playbook, and they don't have someone who knows their way around a locker room, workout room, film room, etc., it only makes things harder for the team.

Some NFL talking head mentioned today that a good pickup could be Foles if the Bears are able to let him go.

But with the passing of Knapp, this dude needs SOMEONE to show him around.
